The patios, were not only built by the aristocracy, but they were residences of merchands, jurist or even prosperous craftsmen and corsairs. They are the result of reforms carried out in the 17th. and early 18th. century (only a few date from the 19th).

The house became an element of prestige that showed the importance of each social standing. One of the most important aspects of these patios is the stairway that increases effect of the stately home.

No sólo la nobleza edificaba los "Casals". De hecho, la mayor parte de éstos eran moradas de mercaderes, de juristas, de artesanos acomodados e incluso de activos corsarios. Su aspecto actual es, en muchas ocasiones, el resultado de edificaciones y reformas llevadas a cabo, a lo largo del tiempo, especialmente durante los siglos XVII y XVIII (sólo unos pocos en el s.XIX).
